BIZARRE Secret Formula That Turns Chicago’s River GREEN! (Only 6 People Know It!) | Have YOU Heard?

😂😂😂 If you would like to purchase your own Dad Joke Button, I receive a small commission from you clicking this Amazon affiliate link – https://amzn.to/4i1cD9D

Have YOU heard that the Chicago River turns green using a secret formula known to only 6 people? Stay tuned…

The Chicago River’s famous green dye for St. Patrick’s Day began accidentally in 1961. City pollution-control workers used green dye to trace illegal sewage discharges when Stephen Bailey, a St. Patrick’s Day Parade organizer, noticed a colleague’s overalls stained green. This sparked the idea to dye the entire river! The original dye lasted for weeks, but today they use a secret vegetable-based formula known to only 6 people that breaks down in 24-48 hours. It takes just 40 pounds of dye to turn the river emerald green for hundreds of thousands of spectators!”

Today isn’t just St. Patrick’s Day – it’s also National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day! Did you know this ‘traditional Irish dish’ is actually more Irish-American than truly Irish? In Ireland, the traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal was bacon and cabbage. When Irish immigrants came to America, they substituted affordable corned beef, often bought from Jewish neighbors, creating this cultural fusion we now associate with the holiday!

*Source: NationalDayCalendar.com – National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day, March 17*

On this day in 1762, New York City held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade! That’s right – the tradition began 260 years ago when a small group of Irish soldiers serving in the British Army marched to a tavern to celebrate their heritage. Today, it’s grown into the largest and oldest civilian parade in the United States with over 150,000 participants and 2 million spectators annually!

*Source: OnThisDay.com – March 17, 1762*

Here’s something surprising – St. Patrick’s color wasn’t green but blue! The earliest depictions show him in blue robes, and when the Order of St. Patrick was established in 1783, its official color was ‘St. Patrick’s Blue.’ Green became associated with the holiday much later through the Irish independence movement, the shamrock, and Ireland’s nickname as the ‘Emerald Isle.’ So wearing blue on St. Patrick’s Day is actually more historically accurate!

Finally, my friend Patrick tried to explain Irish step dancing to me yesterday. He said, ‘You have to keep your arms straight and your feet moving quickly.’ I tried it and fell flat on my face! He laughed and said, ‘What happened?’ I told him, ‘I guess I’m just having a HARD TIME KEEPING MY LEGS IN LIME!

And now for our Have YOU heard feature of the day! Today, March 13th, we’re diving headfirst into the wonderfully weird world of inventions. Did you know that someone once tried to patent a device that would automatically rock a baby’s cradle using the motion of a cat? Yes, a feline-powered lullaby machine! The idea was to harness the natural back-and-forth movement of a cat walking on a platform to gently rock a baby to sleep. While this particular invention might not have made it into nurseries, it certainly showcases the ingenuity (or perhaps, absurdity) of some inventors. On March 11th, 1569, the first official state lottery in England was drawn. This lottery was organized by Queen Elizabeth I to raise funds for public works and was held at the west door of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Imagine the excitement! The prizes included cash, plates, and tapestries. This lottery was a significant event, marking the beginning of state-sponsored lotteries in England. (Source: OnThisDay.com, historical records of Elizabethan England)

And now for our Have YOU heard feature of the day! While we often celebrate successful inventions, let’s spare a thought for the truly… ambitious. Did you know that in the late 19th century, inventors were obsessed with human-powered flight? One particularly enthusiastic individual filed a patent for a bicycle equipped with massive, flapping wings! The idea was that by pedaling, the rider would generate enough power to make the wings flap and lift the bicycle into the air. Imagine trying to navigate traffic with that! While this particular invention never quite took off, it’s a testament to the boundless creativity of inventors. (Source: US Patent Office records, late 19th century patent applications)

Today, March 10th, is National Mario Day! Why? Because MAR10 looks like… Mario! Clever, right? This day is all about celebrating everyone’s favorite plumber-turned-hero. According to NationalDayCalendar.com, it’s a day to “revisit your favorite Mario games, share memories, and maybe even dress up as your favorite character.” So, dust off your Nintendo consoles, grab a mushroom power-up, and get ready to stomp some Goombas! Did you know Mario’s original name was Jumpman? He was first seen in the arcade game Donkey Kong! It’s-a-me, Mario! (Source: NationalDayCalendar.com)

On March 10th, 1921, the first officially recognized human-powered flight took place! Gabriel Poulain, a French cyclist and aviator, flew his “Pouducel” aircraft for about 12 meters. Imagine pedaling your way through the sky! It wasn’t exactly a cross-country flight, but it was a groundbreaking moment in aviation history. This remarkable feat happened at the Parc des Princes velodrome in Paris. It’s truly incredible to think about the dedication and ingenuity it took to make that happen. (Source: OnThisDay.com)

Born on this day in 1940, Chuck Norris turns 85 years young today! The martial arts legend who doesn’t do push-ups – he pushes the Earth down! Did you know that before his acting career, Chuck was a six-time undefeated World Professional Middleweight Karate Champion? It’s true! But the real reason doctors slapped him when he was born wasn’t to make him cry – it was to apologize for the delivery room walls he had already roundhouse kicked!
His birth certificate actually has a threat level warning! And his computer has no “ctrl” button because Chuck Norris is always in control!

And now for our Have YOU heard feature of the day! Let’s dive into the wonderfully weird world of patents. Did you know that on this very day, March 10th, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful telephone call? Yes, a landmark moment! But let’s veer off the beaten path. While Bell was revolutionizing communication, other inventors were… well, trying. Take, for instance, Andrew Jackson Bellows, who, in 1925, filed a patent for a machine that would translate chicken clucks. Yes, you heard that right! He believed he could decode poultry patter into human speech. Imagine the possibilities! “Hey, Farmer John, the eggs are ready!” Or, “Danger! Fox in the henhouse!” Sadly, Bellows’ invention never quite took flight. (Source: US Patent Office records)

Cereal Accidents & Pork Royalty! (March 7th’s Wackiest Facts)

Have YOU heard about the time a bunch of cereal went missing from Post? It was a real BREAKFAST break-in… but first!

Today is National Cereal Day! And boy, do I have some GRAPE news for you. Did you know that the first breakfast cereal was created by accident when some wheat fell into a toaster? Okay, I made that up, but the REAL story is even better – it was invented by a doctor at a sanitarium who was trying to cure digestive problems. Talk about a SNAP, CRACKLE, and POP of inspiration!

On this day in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received his telephone patent. Can you HEAR me now? The first words ever spoken on the phone were “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you!” Though I suspect what Bell really wanted to say was “We’ve been trying to reach you about your carriage’s extended warranty!”

March 7th is National Crown Roast of Pork Day! Why did the pig wear a crown? Because he was HOG royalty! Sorry, I know that joke was a bit BOAR-ing, but I’m just trying to bring home the bacon!

Here’s a chilly fact – today In 1912 Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen announces his team was the first to reach the South Pole (located 14 December 1911), 34 days before British explorer Robert Falcon Scott.

Today we’re also celebrating National Be Heard Day! It’s a day for small businesses to make some NOISE about their products and services. Though my neighbor’s small kazoo business isn’t doing so well – they’re really TOOTING their own horn, but nobody’s listening!

And now for our crunchy feature story: On this day in 1897, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg served the first corn flakes at his sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan! The story goes that he accidentally left some cooked wheat out overnight, and it went stale. Being the CEREAL entrepreneur he was, he decided to serve it anyway! One patient said, “Doctor, this breakfast is a bit flat.” Kellogg replied, “Well, that’s because it hasn’t gotten its MORNING FLAKES yet!”

Cheese Explosions, Brain Freezes & a Dentist’s Worst Nightmare! 🧀❄️😂

Did you know today is National Freeze Pop Day? That’s right! March 6th is when we celebrate those icy treats that leave your hands sticky and your tongue colorfully stained! The first freeze pop was accidentally created in 1905 when soda-maker Frank Epperson left a mixture of powdered soda and water with a stirring stick in it on his porch overnight. In the morning, he found it frozen solid – creating what he called the “Epsicle.” Later renamed the Popsicle, these frozen treats eventually evolved into the tubes of flavored ice we know today. I’d tell you more, but I’m getting brain freeze just thinking about it!

On this day in 1899, the pharmacist Felix Hoffmann patented Aspirin! Talk about a headache-solving breakthrough! Hoffman actually developed aspirin while working at Bayer to help his father, who suffered from arthritis and couldn’t tolerate the side effects of other pain relievers. Little did he know his discovery would become one of the most widely used medications in the world! You might say this invention was a real pain-reliever for humanity… I’ll show myself out.

Today is also National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day! If you’ve never had white chocolate cheesecake, you’re missing out on a slice of heaven! White chocolate isn’t technically chocolate at all – it contains cocoa butter but no cocoa solids. It first appeared in the 1930s when the Nestlé company introduced it in Switzerland. Combined with the creamy richness of cheesecake? It’s a match made in dessert paradise! I’d make a joke about cheesecake, but it would be too cheesy… unlike white chocolate!

On March 6th, 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev presented the first Periodic Table of Elements to the Russian Chemical Society. Talk about organizing chaos! Before Mendeleev’s breakthrough, chemists were trying to make sense of the growing number of discovered elements with no systematic way to categorize them. Mendeleev’s genius was arranging elements by atomic weight AND leaving gaps for undiscovered elements. He even predicted the properties of elements not yet discovered! That’s right – this guy was so smart, he discovered elements that weren’t even THERE yet! Now that’s what I call having great chemistry with science!

March 6th is National Dentist’s Day! Let’s take a moment to appreciate those brave souls who venture where no one wants to go – into our mouths! The first dental school in the world was established in 1840 in Baltimore, Maryland. Before professional dentistry, people relied on barbers or general physicians to pull their painful teeth. So next time you’re in that chair, just remember – it could be worse. You could have your barber asking “a little off the top… of your tooth?” while wielding a pair of pliers!

Cheese Doodle Chaos & Molasses Mayhem! (March 5th’s Wildest Facts)

Have YOU heard about the time Boston literally drowned in molasses? It was a sticky situation that really SYRUP-titiously got out of hand… but first!

Today is National Cheese Doodle Day! And boy, do I have some CHEESY facts for you. Did you know that the average American eats about 100 pounds of cheese puffs each year? That’s a lot of orange fingers! I guess you could say we’re all pretty CORN-y about our snacks!

On this day in 1963, the Hula Hoop patent was granted to Wham-O! Talk about a TWIST of fate – the company really went AROUND AND AROUND with the patent office before getting approval. You might say they had to jump through some HOOPS!

March 5th is National Multiple Personality Day! I’d tell you more about it, but I’m of two minds on the subject… Actually, make that THREE minds! And they all agree – this holiday deserves multiple celebrations!

Speaking of split decisions, on this day in 1946, Winston Churchill gave his famous “Iron Curtain” speech. He really STEELED himself for that one! I heard the audience was RIVETED!

Today is National Packing Peanuts Day. These foam nuggets were first invented in 1965 by Dow Chemical as an alternative to traditional packaging materials. Made from expanded polystyrene, they’re designed to protect fragile items during shipping and can be recycled at many shipping centers.

And now for our sticky feature story: On this day in 1919, Boston experienced the Great Molasses Flood! A massive tank of molasses burst, sending a 15-foot wave of sticky sweetness through the streets at 35 mph. The cleanup took weeks because, well, you try rushing molasses! One street cleaner said, “This job is really DRAGGING on!” His partner replied, “Well, what did you expect? We’re working at a MOLASSES pace!”

Commas Save Lives & Chocolate Chaos! (March 4th’s Wildest Facts)

Have YOU heard about the time an entire city got hooked on candy bars? It was a real SWEET success story… but first!

Did you know that today is National Grammar Day? I’m not trying to be tense about it, but this is a present I can’t pass up! And hey, if you’re wondering why grammar is important, just remember: commas save lives. “Let’s eat, Grandma” is very different from “Let’s eat Grandma”!

On this day in 1917, the iconic Jeep went into production. Talk about a vehicle that really ROSE to the occasion! The military loved it so much, they said it had the perfect MILITARY BEARING – get it? Because it has bearings? And it’s military? No? Well, I guess that joke needs some more… TRACTION!

March 4th is National Pound Cake Day! Why is it called pound cake, you ask? Because the original recipe called for a pound each of flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. Talk about a recipe that really WEIGHS on your mind!

Speaking of weighty matters, on this day in 1902, the American Automobile Association (AAA) was founded. They really got their motor running by helping drivers who were having a BRAKE-down!

Today we’re also celebrating National Hug a G.I. Day! Just remember to ask permission first – you don’t want to get court MARTIAL-ed for assault!

And now for our sweet feature story: On this day in 1912, the city of Chicago got its first taste of the Hershey’s Candy Bar! The chocolate was such a hit that people were literally lining up around the block. You might say they were all MILTON with excitement! The demand was so high that one store owner complained, “These chocolate bars are driving me NUTS!” To which his assistant replied, “Sir, those are the almond ones!”
