I guess you could say they were really COCOA-nuts about it! They even used cocoa beans as currency – talk about RICH chocolate!

And speaking of rich, we’re celebrating Jackie Robinson’s birthday! Born on this day in 1919, he didn’t just STRIKE OUT racism in baseball – he was also a six-letter athlete in college! I guess you could say he really COVERED all the BASES! He even played professional football before baseball – now that’s what I call a BALL player!

Here’s something that’ll make you say “HOLY MACKEREL” – did you know that goldfish can tell different types of music apart? They can distinguish between Bach and Stravinsky! I guess you could say they’re really SWIMMING in culture! And here’s the best part – they have a memory span of at least five months.

And have you heard about the Backwards Day celebration? That’s right, January 31st is also National Backwards Day! I guess you could say we’re really TURNING things around! It’s the perfect day to eat dessert first – because why should dinner get all the SPOT-LIGHT first?

January 30th is National Croissant Day? Now that’s something to get ROLLED up about! These buttery treats were invented in Austria, not France – I guess you could say they’re really RISING to the occasion with that plot twist! And here’s a FLAKY fact – it takes 72 hours to make a proper croissant!

We’re celebrating FDR’s birthday! Born on this day in 1882, he served the LONGEST presidency in U.S. history! I guess you could say he really DEALT with that record! He gave famous “fireside chats” on the radio – talk about getting FIRED up about communication!

Here’s something that’ll make you say “SNOW WAY” – did you know that no two zebras have the same stripe pattern? It’s like nature’s barcode system! I guess you could say they really EARNED their STRIPES! And here’s the best part – baby zebras can run within an hour of being born. Talk about hitting the ground RUNNING!

And have you heard about the Library of Congress? On this day in 1815, they bought Thomas Jefferson’s personal library of 6,487 books! I guess you could say they really BOOKED themselves a piece of history! The price was $23,950 – quite a NOVEL investment!

And here’s one last fact that’ll make you BUZZ – bees can recognize human faces! Scientists discovered they can remember and distinguish between different facial features. I guess you could say they’re really BEE-ing observant!

Here’s something that’ll make you say “HOLY COW” – did you know that cows have best friends and get stressed when separated? Talk about MOOO-ving friendship goals! I guess you could say they really MILK those relationships for all they’re worth!

And have you heard about Kansas’s official state food? On this day in 2016, they made the sandwich their state meal! I guess you could say they really BREAD that decision carefully! They must have thought it was the best thing since… well, you know what!

And talk about a REEL-y big birthday – we’re celebrating Frank Darabont, born on this day in 1959! He directed “The Shawshank Redemption” – I guess you could say he really PRISON-ted us with a masterpiece! What’s even cooler? He wrote the script in just eight weeks – now that’s what I call a SENTENCE with perfect timing!

Have you heard that astronauts can’t burp in space? Without gravity, the liquid and gas in their stomachs don’t separate, making it impossible! I guess you could say they’re really having to STOMACH that situation! Space travel isn’t all it’s GASSED up to be!

Have you heard about the Pride of Baghdad lions? On this day in 2003, archaeologists found ancient lion bones in Iraq that proved these big cats once roamed Mesopotamia! Talk about a ROAR-ing discovery! I guess you could say they really PRIDED themselves on that find!

And here’s a slice of history – the first chocolate cake wasn’t made until 1764, when Dr. James Baker figured out how to grind cocoa beans. You could say he really TOOK THE CAKE with that discovery!

And talk about a NOTEWORTHY birthday – Mozart was born on this day in 1756! He wrote his first piece at age 5, which is pretty impressive considering most kids that age are still learning their ABC’s, not their Do-Re-Mi’s! He even had a pet starling that could sing part of his concerto – I guess you could say that bird was quite the TWEET composer!

Here’s something that’ll make you go PAW-SE and think – animals can be left or right-handed! They call it “laterality” in science circles, but I call it getting a GRIP on things! Polar bears are usually lefties, while parrots are RIGHT on board with their left feet. Talk about putting your best foot forward!

Now here’s something to get CRACKLING about – the last Monday in January is National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day! This protective packing material was originally invented to be wallpaper! Talk about POP art! I guess you could say that idea really got WRAPPED up in something bigger!

Talk about a “spread-tacular” amount! And here’s something that’ll make you go nuts – peanuts aren’t actually nuts at all, they’re legumes!

And speaking of spreading news, on this day in 1935, the first canned beer was sold by the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company! But here’s the “hop-ening” truth – they were so nervous about how it would be received, they gave away the first 2,000 cans for free! Talk about a “can-do” attitude! I guess you could say they really “tapped” into the market!

Neil Diamond was born on this day in 1941! Before becoming the “Sweet Caroline” singer we know today, he actually started out writing songs for a whopping $50 a week! Talk about a “diamond” in the rough! I guess you could say he really made his career “shine” on! These puns are getting “crystal” clear, aren’t they?

Want to hear something that’ll really make you say “gold-y”? Today in 1848, James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill, starting the California Gold Rush! But here’s the “nugget” of truth – Sutter ended up going bankrupt because all his workers left to search for gold! Talk about a “rush” to judgment!

In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell made history by becoming the first woman to earn a medical degree in the U.S., thanks to an unexpected acceptance to medical school. Talk about a “doctor-ordered” twist of fate!

Celebrating a birthday today is the iconic John Hancock, born in 1737, whose signature on the Declaration of Independence became synonymous with signing your name. Leaving his “mark” on history indeed!

On this day in 1556, the deadliest earthquake in history hit Shaanxi, China, reshaping the area and forming new lakes.

It’s also National Handwriting Day, highlighting the importance of legible writing, especially in the medical field to avoid prescription errors due to poor handwriting.

And in entertainment history, the movie “The Wedding Planner” claimed the spotlight on January 23rd, 2001, while Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” topped the charts on January 23rd, 1985.

Celebrating a birthday today is the legendary D.J. Jazzy Jeff, born in 1965. Did you know he started honing his skills on his mother’s record player at just 10 years old? Talk about starting the “groove” early and turning passion into a successful career!

In literary history, on this day in 1789, the first American novel, “The Power of Sympathy” by William Hill Brown, made its mark. This groundbreaking novel was inspired by a real scandal, making it a true “page-turner” of its time.

Happy birthday to the legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, who turns 84 today! Despite being known as the “Golden Bear,” he has a surprising fear of bees. Quite the unexpected twist for a golfing icon!

Switching gears to technology, in 1954, the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, set sail. Its name, a nod to Captain Nemo’s vessel from “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” adds a touch of literary depth to its legacy.

Did you know it’s National Cheese Lovers Day? The average American consumes about 40 pounds of cheese annually – quite a “cheesy” feat! And speaking of cheese, ever heard about the world’s largest cheese board with over 4,400 pounds of cheese? Now that’s a “gouda” time!

In history, on this day in 1865, L.A. Thompson patented the first roller coaster, albeit cruising at a modest 6 miles per hour. Quite the “roller coaster-er,” right? Imagine the thrill for those early riders!

Celebrating birthdays, today marks the birth of DeForest Kelley, known as Dr. McCoy from Star Trek, born in 1920. From cowboy roles to space doctor, his journey is truly out of this world!

Shifting gears to politics, in 1937, Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first president inaugurated in January, a significant “time-ing” change in presidential history!

Today Donald Trump becomes the 47th US President and the 15th President to be inaugurated since that day 87 years ago.

Let’s not forget it’s Penguin Awareness Day! Did you know these tuxedo-wearing birds can zoom through water at speeds up to 22 miles per hour? Now that’s some “suite” speed!
