“Have YOU heard?” | March 6, 2025

"Have YOU heard?" Show, voice over

Cheese Explosions, Brain Freezes & a Dentist’s Worst Nightmare! 🧀❄️😂

Did you know today is National Freeze Pop Day? That’s right! March 6th is when we celebrate those icy treats that leave your hands sticky and your tongue colorfully stained! The first freeze pop was accidentally created in 1905 when soda-maker Frank Epperson left a mixture of powdered soda and water with a stirring stick in it on his porch overnight. In the morning, he found it frozen solid – creating what he called the “Epsicle.” Later renamed the Popsicle, these frozen treats eventually evolved into the tubes of flavored ice we know today. I’d tell you more, but I’m getting brain freeze just thinking about it!

On this day in 1899, the pharmacist Felix Hoffmann patented Aspirin! Talk about a headache-solving breakthrough! Hoffman actually developed aspirin while working at Bayer to help his father, who suffered from arthritis and couldn’t tolerate the side effects of other pain relievers. Little did he know his discovery would become one of the most widely used medications in the world! You might say this invention was a real pain-reliever for humanity… I’ll show myself out.

Today is also National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day! If you’ve never had white chocolate cheesecake, you’re missing out on a slice of heaven! White chocolate isn’t technically chocolate at all – it contains cocoa butter but no cocoa solids. It first appeared in the 1930s when the Nestlé company introduced it in Switzerland. Combined with the creamy richness of cheesecake? It’s a match made in dessert paradise! I’d make a joke about cheesecake, but it would be too cheesy… unlike white chocolate!

On March 6th, 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev presented the first Periodic Table of Elements to the Russian Chemical Society. Talk about organizing chaos! Before Mendeleev’s breakthrough, chemists were trying to make sense of the growing number of discovered elements with no systematic way to categorize them. Mendeleev’s genius was arranging elements by atomic weight AND leaving gaps for undiscovered elements. He even predicted the properties of elements not yet discovered! That’s right – this guy was so smart, he discovered elements that weren’t even THERE yet! Now that’s what I call having great chemistry with science!

March 6th is National Dentist’s Day! Let’s take a moment to appreciate those brave souls who venture where no one wants to go – into our mouths! The first dental school in the world was established in 1840 in Baltimore, Maryland. Before professional dentistry, people relied on barbers or general physicians to pull their painful teeth. So next time you’re in that chair, just remember – it could be worse. You could have your barber asking “a little off the top… of your tooth?” while wielding a pair of pliers!
